Exploring The Effectiveness Of Anti Shoplifting Devices

By Rebekah Alford

Many businesses are faced with the problem of losing merchandise to shoplifters. Some of the incidences involve small time thieves but the worst form is done by seasoned professionals. A number of technologies are used to detect and eliminate the theft. Anti shoplifting devices are a great solution for detecting and apprehending shoplifters. They also reduce the workload needed to manage the problem effectively since less manpower is required to oversee the process.

While many solutions are available for use, most of them are not effective in curbing the menace completely. Having a combination of them is more preferable since they will complement each other. Some of the solutions are made for a particular application only. For instance, a device made to protect clothing is unlikely to wok well with perfume bottles. However, by mixing up the two solutions, each category will be covered effectively.

A security device, in addition to detecting theft, is also useful in deterring potential thieves. A device that is easily noted by everyone and seems harder to beat, can make shoplifters rethink their decision to steal. It may also prompt the shoplifter to wonder what other mechanisms have been put in place to counter theft attempts. Having second thoughts is also likely to lower the number of attempts.

Tags and labels that pose a challenge in removing or disabling are a good solution to preventing theft. A shoplifter who has to work harder to disable a security device is unlikely to undertake the theft to completion. If, on the other hand, the security objects were easily disabled, their effectiveness would reduce significantly. This might mean searching for another solution.

Although tagging each product works well in securing items, it can be challenging to do so on small products. Larger products such as furniture are easier to tag and probably costs less to do so. Many security products can be tried and tested to determine which is best suited for every category of products. Using the wrong solution on any item may not work or it might become too expensive for profitability.

The business ought to have an efficient mechanism for disabling every device on all products that have been paid for. Buyers will not have to worry about setting off alarms as they leave. Treating a paying customer to such an embarrassing situation is not fair to them. Since some tags produce ink on items like clothes if they are not disabled, it can be unfair to have it happen to a buying customer.

Other systems can also be used to enhance security and also provide verifiable proof of theft when need arises. Surveillance cameras are a good example, which is useful for this purpose. A shoplifter caught on camera is unlikely to get away with a crime when the evidence is presented. This will assist in having more offenders being caught and getting punished for their crimes.

The challenge of theft is one that affects many businesses. Different solutions have been devised to help eliminate this problem. As the technology is improved, better devices get introduced into the market. Having anti shoplifting devices implemented in a business is an effective way of reducing theft cases. By combining different solutions, the menace can be eliminated completely.
