Creating Regular Traffic for a Sticky Blog

By Shane Berry

Building a targeted blog on your favorite topic is super easy these days. Creating a free blog on a site like Blogger or WordPress is easy and you can start posting immediately. This can even be done without any investment on your part. Though...you probably won't have much incentive to create great content if you don't have a lot of readers. That's why, in addition to attracting new visitors to your blog you also need to work on giving those visitors reasons to come back again and again.

Don't ever forget that the reason people visit a blog is because they are hoping to connect with someone on a particular topic or subject. This is why it pays to spend time creating a personal feel for all of the stuff you do on your blog from writing content to interacting with readers. Building a "personal brand" takes a lot of time and it won't happen fast. If your readers feel like they are connecting with you on a personal level, however, they will trust you more and find what you have to say even more attractive and relevant. This will make your blog even stickier and build your stable of return visitors.

Offer readers more than just one option for subscribing to your site. RSS is a superb option for subscription and keeping readers informed about updates made to your blog but you need to provide other options as well, like e-mail subscriptions. There are lots of services that will offer to e-mail your feed to your subscribers, like the ones who don't want to use an RSS reader. Use one of these free services to give more options to your readers.

Finally, one of the best ways to increase your blog's stick rate is to work on the branding part. This can help your blog stand out from everybody else as the brand you create should be instantly recognized for its worth and value for helping people understand what your goal is about. You should be able to infuse this into your blog's design, content, logo, wherever you have the opportunity to strengthen its image in front of your readers. This creates a unique selling point for your site while simultaneously helping you build up your reader numbers.

All in all, building a successful blog is based on balancing your content with the right kinds of traffic. Once you've build up a good sized stable of regular readers, you won't have to constantly search for new sources of traffic. Your existing readers and subscribers will like what you have to offer and do the work for you. So your primary focus should be on building a good blog that is sticky so that everything else can just fall into place.
