Facebook began as a small social media website when social media was in its infancy. MySpace was its only competitor at that point, but the simplicity of the website and the ease of the way you could connect with people you know made it a much more popular website. The way they did Facebook ads was much different as well.
The wayFacebook ads have progressed is very interesting. It used to be relatively random as to what ads that you would get when you were signed in. You would get the same ads as everyone else. Now, Facebook looks at what you talk about and like and gives you ads that are personalized for you.
It is a little odd to think that Facebook is taking what you talk about and sending you ads that are directly related to them. It seems like they are almost recording everything you talk about which means that it is most likely on a record somewhere. That is slightly unnerving, but not a huge deal.
But, this new way that they use ads is very useful for them. It makes you much more likely to click on an ad if it is more appropriate for your situation. Things that are not applicable to you at all, you will never even think to click on. At least there is a slight chance that someone would click on something they enjoy in real life. Marketing companies like fishbat Inc., also use these to help their company.
And even with all their technology, you still see random ads show up that you do not understand why this would be catered directly towards you. Anything that I talk about on Facebook has to do with sports or my school, for the most part. And yet, somehow, they still throw out ads such as "Innovative pet care services" and "Chris Bodkin for assembly," things that I have literally never spoken of on facebook or even thought about in real life.
